This is an email to a friend composed at 4:39am. She had just sent me a script that she is working on and we were also discussing eye contact. She said she didn't like eye contact because she had read that Descartes said that eyes are the window to people's souls.
Im back in Boston. Its 5am can’t sleep thinking about life & my next moves and stuff.
Flying back to La tonight.
I’ll be able to finish ep. 1 on the plane so yes please send ep. 2
I like eye contact because I love looking at people’s souls. But in today’s world people’s souls are stolen from them, beaten down or stuffed away. I try to do eye contact in a way that it reignites or returns the love in the soul.
Souls are pure love at their core. But they are often wrapped in a smokey black mist of insecurity and pain and past suffering as people replay bad memories in their thoughts. And those thought patterns turn into pain that gets lodged in the cells of the body. Eventually they don’t even consciously know their entire being is being run by pain.
I imagine a tampered soul like the obscurus from fantastic beasts and where to find them.

And this obscurus makes people not want to feel. Or connect.
So they avoid eyes.
I’m not saying you have an obscurus in you, but maybe you’re just afraid of the obscurus in the vast majority of other people.
It’s kind of sad thinking about souls like this but it’s also what makes life beautiful knowing people have the capacity to be vulnerable enough to feel again.
Love,
- Arlin
By the way, Descartes also said “i think therefore i am”
Respectfully, that’s the most fundamental flaw in human conclusions ever. What he should have said was “i am, therefore i am.”

But that’s another discussion.
If ur in or around La lets hang and talk ab philosophy.
1 last thought-before i go back to staring at the back of my eye lids.
Usually people who have experienced the worst pain have the deepest souls.
And those are the people i love the most.
People who haven’t been hurt that much typically aren’t super interesting.
To me at least.
